Getting Ready to Leave

Hello Everyone!

Just a couple more days until we are on our way! In fact, less than forty-eight hours...still unbelievable. I have not packed quite yet, but for the last few weeks I've been writing items down and keeping a list of all the things I will need. It definitely helps to start thinking of stuff to take weeks in advance, because you tend to think of new things you might want to add to the packing list at random times. Even now, with so little time left to go, I still add items to the list!

It's sort of odd. There's this knowledge that I am about to experience something super cool, yet this surreal feeling makes it difficult to wrap my head around it all and actually comprehend what the Japan will be like. It really shows that you could have loads of knowledge about a country and culture and know tons about the place like a textbook, yet have not fully have a true comprehension. It's difficult to explain, but I'm sure many people understand the feeling. I've never done anything like this before, but I am very excited!

I can't wait to meet my host family, and I look forward to seeing what the Japanese school system is like! It will be amazing to get to witness how the old culture mixes with the new. Some things I am most anticipating are the historical aspects of Japan, and getting to see all the people. However, I am also nervous about speaking in Japanese. My reading and writing skills are fine, but I've not gotten too much practice speaking. I suppose now it's time to put my existing skills to the test, and expand a little further! (a lot, hopefully)

Overall, I am super grateful for this wonderful opportunity! I really appreciate foreign language, and this arrangement puts a purpose behind studying and creates a motive besides just for a hobby. It's a unique program, and I feel super lucky to get to be a part of the Spokane-Nishinomiya relationship. Once again, really super excited and can't wait! Not much left to do now but countdown the hours!
