Looking Forward to the Experience

はじめまして !
私の名前はアマヤ•マーアチンです。
十六才です。二年かん日本語をべんきょしています。

I am a student at North Central High School. I love world languages and I chose Japanese because I wanted to learn something different.Japanese characters particularly caught my attention because of their artistic appeal. Japanese culture, their rituals, and their ways of living are all very fascinating. This exchange opportunity is absolutely amazing, and I am super excited to get to take part and share this experience with everyone!

There is less than two months until we leave for Japan, and yet, it is still difficult to imagine that in so little time I will be in another country so different from my own. It is a bit nerve wracking to think that for the first time, I will be venturing off without my parents, and be an entire world away. I believe this will be a valuable experience full of learning and discovering independence, and it will show me just how different cultures can be. Thinking about it makes one realize just how narrow a perspective on the world can be.

I have already had some contact with my exchange sister, Meg, and we’re both so stoked to meet! It has been a slight struggle to communicate because of the awkward time difference, but we’ve made it work. We have talked about the things we find neat in each other's countries, and it’s funny and strange to realize that there are some things we each take for granted in our own countries that the other person thinks are so cool!

What I hope to gain from this experience is a better understanding of Japan’s society and culture, and a greater fluency of the language. Getting to immerse myself directly into the daily life of a Japanese family will definitely help in doing so! Seeing how the world is outside of my own will be life changing through the things I do and see, the people I meet, the friendships made, and everything that’s learned. It’s going to be so fantastic and wonderful and I can’t wait!!!

どうぞよろしくおながいします,
Amaya Martin
